Set up the correct bank payee

Search your bank for Oshawa Taxes or the matching property-tax payee. Banks can use different labels. The tax roll starts with 1813, but do not include those first four digits in the banking account number. Copy the remaining digits from the current bill and check carefully.

A payment sent on the due date can arrive late. The city applies the payment when received, not when the bank button is pressed. Wrong-account corrections can incur fees. Use the Misapplied Payments form if money went to the wrong tax account.

Automatic payment plans

The city offers instalment-date withdrawals or monthly withdrawals on the first or fifteenth. Its published application deadlines are before January 31 for interim bills and before June 1 for final bills.

Use separate forms to join, change bank details or dates, or cancel. Send written changes at least ten business days before the next withdrawal. Cancellation also needs ten business days before the ending date. Do not assume changing a mortgage arrangement automatically changes city payments.

Credits, mortgage changes and proof

A refund request must be written and can require payment proof, an indemnity letter and a statement of adjustments. Accounts with money owing are not eligible for refunds. Rebates or adjustments first reduce outstanding taxes; credit balances can be requested back.

If a new mortgage company is paying taxes, arrange it with that company. If the lender stops paying, the owner must pay the bill’s instalments. In a property sale, give the tax bill to the lawyer and use the lawyer’s statement of adjustments for allocation between owners.

Late and returned payments

The city lists a 1.25% penalty on overdue current-year taxes, charged on the first business day of each month they remain unpaid. Prior-year balances have interest. Charges generally cannot be waived unless a city error occurred.

After two returned payments, cheques and pre-authorized payments may be unavailable for at least two years. The city describes an exception if the account is brought up to date within six months of the initial dishonoured date. Contact Taxation for an individual account issue.
