Read the flags before entering

Red-and-yellow flags mark the edges of the supervised swim area. Green indicates lower-hazard conditions; yellow warns of moderate hazards such as rough water or strong wind; red means high hazards and swimming is not advised. No flags mean no lifeguard is on duty.

A flag does not replace checking the daily water-quality notice. Durham Region tests Beach East for harmful bacteria. Algae blooms can develop quickly, including in warm conditions or after heavy rain. Follow posted water advisories and lifeguard instructions.

Access, lifejackets and facilities

Beach access mats run from the boardwalk onto the sand for people using mobility aids. City staff maintain them daily. Washrooms are open when lifeguards are on duty.

The seasonal lifejacket loaner program runs from the third Monday in June to Labour Day. It has several sizes and styles, subject to availability. A station is available outside guard hours during the program, with extra jackets supplied during supervised hours. Return borrowed jackets to the lifeguard office.

Weather and permitted activities

Heat alerts may extend seasonal supervision until dusk, weather permitting. Rain or air below 18°C can change schedules. During severe weather, lifeguards close the water area and do not remain on duty.

Personal watercraft, including canoes, kayaks and paddleboards, are prohibited in the Beach East swimming area. Children need direct adult supervision within arm’s reach. The normal lifeguard season has ended by the October checked date.
